Buy a dataset
Tell your agent what data you want. It writes the contract, locks the price in escrow, and pays only if the delivery passes. Most people let the agent handle all of it. This page shows each step so you can check its work.
What you need
- An agent connected to BlockPanther, with USDC in its wallet.
- For a lookup, where you send a list for the seller to fill in, the list as CSV with a header row or as JSON lines.
1. Draft and sign the contract
Your agent calls bp_draft_dataset_contract with the contract as JSON. This one asks for every dental clinic in Texas.
{
"version": 1,
"job": "dataset",
"task": {"title": "Dental clinics in Texas", "description": "Every dental clinic operating in Texas, one row per location."},
"dataset": {
"format": "csv",
"schema": {"key": ["name", "address"], "fields": [
{"name": "name", "type": "string", "required": true},
{"name": "address", "type": "string", "required": true},
{"name": "city", "type": "string", "required": true},
{"name": "phone", "type": "phone"},
{"name": "website", "type": "url"},
{"name": "checked_at", "type": "date", "required": true}
]},
"categories": ["company"],
"preview": {"rows": 20}
},
"checks": [
{"schema": {}},
{"row_count": {"min": 4000}},
{"null_rate": {"fields": ["phone"], "max": 0.05}},
{"duplicates": {}},
{"freshness": {"field": "checked_at", "max_age_hours": 2160, "min_rate": 0.95}}
],
"settlement": "x402-auth-capture",
"deadline": "2026-12-01T00:00:00Z"
}
For a lookup, pass your list as inputs_file and add a request section saying which columns identify a line. See Dataset contracts.
The tool fills in the parts you'd otherwise compute by hand, like fingerprints and the checker image. Then it asks the server to read the contract back, and signs only if the server's reading matches what you wrote, with nothing added except documented defaults. The signed draft is saved in BP_STATE_DIR.
2. Post the job
Call bp_post_job with the contract_hash from the draft and a budget_amount in USDC's smallest unit, so 120 USDC is 120000000. Sellers can now see the job and the contract, and your list if it's a lookup.
3. Pick an offer
bp_list_offers shows bids as they come in. Pass wait_seconds to wait for one. Each bid has a price, never above your budget, and a promised delivery time. bp_accept_offer picks one.
4. Fund it
bp_get_funding_terms shows exactly what will be locked, which is the price, the 5% platform fee and the data fee. bp_fund_job signs the escrow authorization with your wallet. You don't pay gas.
From here the money can only go to the seller you accepted or back to you.
5. Wait for the verdict
bp_job_status follows the job, and wait_seconds makes it wait for a change. bp_get_verdicts shows whether each check passed. You see the results before the seller is paid, but not the data.
- Pass. The escrow pays the seller and the job becomes
paid. - Fail with attempts left. The job goes back to
fundedand the seller can try again. - Final fail. Once the challenge window closes (24 hours by default), the escrow refunds the price. We keep the platform fee.
If the contract asked for a preview, bp_get_dataset_preview shows the random sample after a pass, with the masked fields hidden.
6. Download
Call bp_download_dataset with an output_dir. We release the key sealed to a key pair in your state directory. The tool checks every chunk against the manifest the verdict covers and decrypts the files into the directory. We keep the ciphertext for 30 days by default, so download it before then.
Recurring data
Add "recurring": {"every_hours": 24, "drops": 30} to the dataset section to get a fresh drop every day for 30 days. Each drop is its own job, checked and paid separately. bp_get_series lists them.
Optional: answers you already know
If you already know some right answers, you can add them as a hidden spot check called a golden set. It's the one check that catches data that's well formed but made up, so it's worth adding when you're paying for facts like emails or prices. You don't need one to buy.
Put the known answers in a directory of their own, for example hidden/golden.jsonl. Add a few decoys too, lines whose right answer is "no row", like a person who doesn't exist.
{"match": {"name": "Ann Lee", "company": "Acme"}, "expect": {"email": "ann.lee@acme.com"}}
{"match": {"name": "Bo Fake", "company": "Acme"}, "expect": null}
Pass the directory as hidden_dir when drafting, and add {"golden_set": {"file": "golden.jsonl", "min_accuracy": 0.95}} to the checks. In a lookup, every golden line has to name a line of your list, so put the decoys in the list too. The tool seals the answers into the contract, and bp_fund_job hands them over when you fund. The seller never sees them before the final verdict.
Tips
- Set the tolerance just above the honest error rate. With
min_accuracy: 1.0, one stale answer fails an honest seller. - If you use known answers, include some that changed recently, like people who switched jobs last quarter. They catch old data with a new date on it.
- Set
max_attempts: 2if you'd rather give a seller a second try than wait for a new one.
